<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce driving voltage. <P>SOLUTION: The display element is provided with a pair of substrates 1 and 2 at least one of which is transparent, a medium layer 3 interposed between the pair of substrates 1 and 2 and comprising a medium wherein degree of optical anisotropy is changed by applying voltage, and at least a pair of comb-shaped electrodes 4 and 5 applying an electric field nearly parallel to the substrates 1 and 2 to the medium layer 3. The comb-shaped electrodes 4 and 5 are provided on the substrate 1 via projectingly formed insulating layers 21 and so constituted that the maximum electric field region in the comb-shaped electrodes 4 and 5 is formed in a position separated from an interface of the substrate 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
