PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge defect detection method whereby discharge defects of a transparent ink can be detected simply and correctly. SOLUTION: In the discharge defect detection method for detecting the discharge defects of the transparent ink at the time of carrying out image recording by discharging both a fundamental color ink and the transparent ink from a plurality of recording heads for fundamental color 5 and a recording head for transparent 7 to a recording medium P, an infrared absorbing agent which absorbs infrared rays and colors is mixed into the transparent ink. The transparent ink with the infrared absorbing agent mixed is discharged from the recording head for transparent 7. A striking state of the transparent ink is visually detected by irradiating infrared rays to the transparent ink struck on a surface of the recording medium P. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
