A detergent composition which comprises 10 to 40 wt.% alkylbenzenesulfonic acid salt, 7 to 40 wt.% alkali agent, up to 15 wt.% nonionic surfactant, and 0.07 to 10 wt.% foam regulator, the foam regulator comprising a water-soluble organic polymer having an average molecular weight exceeding 1,000,000; a method of washing in which an object to be washed is washed with a washing liquid containing the detergent composition; and a foam regulator comprising a water-soluble organic polymer having an average molecular weight exceeding 1,000,000. The detergent composition is suitable for use in washing clothes, etc.
