<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material composition for easily and stably manufacturing an La-Fe-Si alloy having an NaZn<SB>13</SB>type crystal structure and also to provide a method for manufacturing the alloy. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetic alloy has a composition represented by (La-Y)<SB>A</SB>M<SB>B</SB>Si<SB>C</SB>H<SB>D</SB>T<SB>bal</SB>(wherein, M is one or more elements selected from Ti, Zr and Hf; T contains Fe as an essential element and also contains, if necessary, one or more elements selected from Co, Ni and Cr; A, B, C and D satisfy 6.0≤A≤7.5, 0.01≤B≤5.0, 8.0≤C≤14.0 and 3.5≤D≤15.0, respectively; and La-Y means that a part of La is substituted by Y or the like). In the method for manufacturing the magnetic alloy, a melt of the molten magnetic alloy is solidified by a strip casting method.
