The aim of the invention is to be able to operate three-phase synchronous machines also in a delta circuit. Said aim is achieved by making the values of the phase spacing Tp and the coil pitch Tsp satisfy especially the equations Tsp = 2/3 Tp or Tsp = 4/3 Tp. The circulating currents in the delta circuits, and thus losses, are particularly low in said geometric arrangements. Such advantages are also obtained when the ratios between the phase spacing Tp and the coil pitch Tsp deviate slightly from the ratios mentioned above.
