The present invention relates to the field of composition analysis of a natural gas sample via tunable laser diode absorption spectroscopy in order to determine the calorific value of the natural gas. Said method comprises the steps of: using said tunable laser diode 2 for sending a laser beam through a cell 3 comprising said gas sample, after interaction of said laser beam 2 with said gas sample within said cell, detecting said laser beam and determining the absorption of the gas, said laser diode 2 being scanned in wavelength via a current or temperature driver with a predetermined continuous single mode tuning range and a central wavelength comprised in the [2.292 pm&rsqb - 2.310 pm] interval.
