A method of treating metallic workpieces with an anodizing solution is disclosed. During this method, a non-conductive polymer containing layer is generated on the metallic surface that provides an essential contribution in the initiation of the formation of micro-plasma arcs. This layer is transformed to a gel layer in which gel micelles are oriented according to the electromagnetic field.
