ULTRAHIGH-INDEX-CONTRAST PLANAR STRICTLY NON-BLOCKING HIGH-PORT-COUNT CROSS-CONNECT SWITCH MATRIX

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrahigh-index-contrast planar strictly non-blocking high-port-count cross-connect switch matrix.

SOLUTION: The planar type switch matrix has a waveguide layer and an electrode layer, wherein the waveguide layer has a plurality of 1×2 Y-branch thermo-optic digital switches. Each Y branch has a buried channel waveguide showing over 5% refractive index contrast. The electrode layer has a plurality of electrodes, with each electrode disposed on the clad layer of the above buried channel waveguide so as to distribute two electrodes in each Y branch. The invention discloses a highly integrated lightwave circuit made of an ultrahigh-index-contrast material, in particular, an optical switch array and a means for its fabrication.
