PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating device used for an automobile transmission and reliable in operation. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission 10 is provided with two shafts, a gear set to obtain various different gear steps, and a plurality of shaft mechanisms 14 and 16 to respectively form relatively non-rotatable shaft/gear combination and capable of being operated for disconnection. The operating device 12 comprises a plurality of output elements 40, 42, and 44 capable of being moved for engagement with shift mechanisms 14 and 16 of the transmission 10 for the purpose of operation; a main operating device 22 provided with a main operating element 26 capable of operating for a reduction gear ON; and a sub-operating device 24 provided with sub-operating elements 32 and 34 situated movably for gear off. The main operating device 22 and the sub-operating device 24 are co-operated with each other for the generation of a relative movement where at least two output elements are controlled.
