PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid application device which can keep a liquid tightness between the coating surface of a liquid application member and a contact member which comes into contact with the former and prevent the leakage/evaporation of a coating liquid from a liquid retaining space formed of the application member and a liquid retaining member from occurring for a long time. SOLUTION: In the liquid application device, a liquid retaining space S for retaining the coating liquid is formed by bringing the coating surface of the liquid application member 1001 into contact with the liquid retaining member 2001 and the coating liquid supplied to the coating surface of the liquid application member 1001 by making a round of movement of the liquid application member 1001, is applied to a coating medium P. The liquid retaining member 2001 is installed, in a freely advancing/retreating manner, to the coating surface of the liquid application member 1001 and is set in contact with the coating surface by the pressing force of a means 2006 for pressing the retaining member. In addition, the coating medium P is pressed to the coating surface of the liquid application member 1001 by a medium pressing means 2007. The pressing force of the medium pressing means 2007 includes a counter-component against pressing force which is applied to the liquid application member 1001 from the liquid retaining member 2001 by the means 2006 for pressing the retaining member.
