An over temperature protection design for a flat heat pipe has the porous inner core covered loosely by the two outer metal foil walls (4). This enables the foil walls to lift off the core if subjected to high internal pressure caused by high temperatures. The lifting of the foils creates additional ducts for the vapour flow. Additional cooling is provided by a cooling pipe loop (2) fitted into the heat pipe near to the filling vent. The core has a large pore inner layer (6) sandwiched by small pore outer layers (5) which support the foil walls.
