PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a transfer speed no less than the lowest speed by using a whole recording area on a disk and optimizing a latency time even if free areas exist randomly. SOLUTION: An HDD 4 writes transfer data transferred from a host device 2 on the disk 11. The disk 11 is divided into four areas E1 to E4 so as to have nearly the same capacities based on its consecutive transfer speed. The HDD 4 selects an area in order according to a prescribed basic sequence, finds and selects free areas in the selected area, and writes data by the unit of a super cluster SC. When selecting the free area, an area where the total of a period for seeking from the end of SC to the head of the next SC, the latency time of the disk and a period for writing the data is the shortest is selected. For example, an average transfer time in the case of writing the data in the SCs of the four areas is calculated and when this is shorter than a reference time corresponding to the lowest speed of transferring, an area where the speed of transfer is lower is used preferentially.
