PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator suitable for realizing the enlargement of a luminance dynamic range and gradation number, the improvement of the luminance and the quality of a display picture and the miniaturization of the device. SOLUTION: The projection display device 100 is equipped with a light source 10, a reflection type liquid crystal light valve 30 having a plurality of pixels which can control reflectance T1 independently, a relay lens 16 forming the optical image of the light valve 30 on the pixel surface of a color modulation light valve, dichroic mirrors 44a and 44b separating a light beam from the relay lens 16 to light beams of three primary colors RGB, a plurality of color modulation light valves having a plurality of pixels on which the light beams separated by the mirrors 44a and 44b are made incident respectively and which can control transmittance T2 independently, and a dichroic prism 48 composing the light beams from the respective color modulation light valves.
