<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochemical device having battery characteristics, and to provide an electrode. <P>SOLUTION: In the electrochemical device having a first electrode, a second electrode, and an electrolyte, ions are produced from an electrolyte comprising a group 2A and/or a group 3A element in the periodic table, an active material in the first electrode comprises a compound of at least one kind element selected from the group comprising group 1B, group 2B, group 6A, group 7A, and group 8A elements in the periodic table, and absorbing or releasing of ions is performed by the interaction between the electrolyte and the active material.
