PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which shortens a first copying time and can also obtain images of a high image quality. SOLUTION: The color printer 100 is of a tandem type equipped with polygon mirrors which carry out writing scanning in the horizontal scanning direction for every image forming part 101K, 101C, 101M, 101Y of each color. Moreover, the color printer 100 is equipped with a synchronizing signal output means (SOS sensor) for outputting a synchronizing signal for the rotation of the polygon mirror at each of the image forming parts 101K, 101C, 101M and 101Y, and a phase control means (control part 130) for controlling a phase of the rotation of the polygon mirror for each image forming part except that of the first order. Furthermore, the control part 130 carries out phase matching of the rotation of the polygon mirror on the basis of the synchronizing signal of the synchronizing signal output means of the image forming part of the upper stream than the subject image forming part.
