PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that a liquid application roller deteriorates due to a long-term contact between the roller and a coating liquid, in a liquid application device. SOLUTION: In this liquid application device, in order to solve the above problem, the following steps are taken: a liquid retaining member is made to stand by for 60 s. in such a state that the coating liquid is retained as it is on the member, when a liquid application operation to a coating medium is ended (S201); unless a liquid application command is issued, the coating liquid recovery operation to discharge the coating liquid from the liquid retaining member is performed (S202); when it is judged that the liquid application operation will not be performed for some time following the termination of the liquid application operation, the soaking of the liquid application roller in the coating liquid is avoided by recovering the coating liquid from the liquid retaining member and thus the deterioration of the roller by the coating liquid is inhibited.
