Method for detecting the position of sequences of markings (2) on a carrier (1) relative to a detector (3). According to the method, the sequence of markings are compared with a reference sequence which corresponds to the marking sequence on the carrier. The comparison takes place by comparing measured marking sections with sections of the reference sequence. An error signal is generated if there not complete agreement between the compared sections. An independent claim is made for a device for measuring the position of a sequence of markings on a carrier.
