PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a macromolecular actuator which can be driven not only in aqueous solution but also in air and besides is large in displacement magnitude and is excellent in response speed. SOLUTION: This macromolecular actuator is made by immobilizing dextran compounds 8a and 8b, which have many functional groups of the same polarity as the functional group of an ion-exchange membrane 5, on both surface layers of the ion-exchange membrane 5, and applying water retaining layers 6a and 6b, which consist of hyaluronic acids capable of retaining a large quantity of moisture, thinly and equally on both faces of the ion-exchange membrane 5.
