PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology for realizing compatibility between stability of combustion and improvement in exhaust performance when the engine operating condition is in low-speed rotation to medium-speed rotation region and no-load to medium load region. SOLUTION: In this valve system control method of an internal combustion engine for controlling the opening and closing timing of intake valves 7A, 7B, when the engine operating condition is in low-speed rotation to medium-speed rotation region and no-load to medium load region, the intake valves 7A, 7B are opened later than the base valve timing, and further at the stage of closing the intake valves 7A, 7B, one intake valve 7A of the intake valves 7A, 7B is closed earlier than the other intake valve 7B.
