PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element exhibiting a high display contrast ratio. SOLUTION: The subject liquid crystal composition comprises at least each one of dichroic pigments, host liquid crystals and discotheque liquid crystal compounds. The liquid crystal element has a liquid crystal layer between a pair of electrodes at least one of which is a transparent electrode, where the liquid crystal layer comprises the liquid crystal composition.
