PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a flat coating film excellent in smoothness, which uses a coating showing little increase in viscosity, and the flat coating film which is excellent in durability and is hardly damaged by nails, collision of articles etc. obtained thereby. SOLUTION: A flat coating composition contains diatomaceous earth having an average particle size of 2-20μm and≤3 mass% oversize particles left on a 50μm sieve. The diatomaceous earth is preferably flux-calcined diatomaceous earth and contained in an amount of 0.1-30 mass% against a resin solid content of the coating composition.
