PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely and efficiently decomposing a difficultly decomposable fluorinated carboxylic acid or ions thereof, especially, a perfluorocarboxylic acid (e.g., trifluoroacetic acid) or ions thereof. SOLUTION: The difficultly decomposable fluorinated carboxylic acid is decomposed by irradiation with light in the presence of peroxodisulfuric acid or peroxodisulfate ions or in the presence of sulfate radical anions.
