PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily manufacture a small diameter glass substrate for a magnetic disk by cutting a zone to become the glass substrate for the magnetic disk from a glass base material so as not to be tapered in the end face to facilitate a post shaping process. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the glass substrate for the magnetic disk comprises: making a 1st incision C1 forming the outside edge of zone 3 to become the glass substrate for the magnetic disk on the main surface of the glass base material 2; making a 2nd incision C2 ranging from the vicinity of the 1st incision to the vicinity of the outer peripheral part of the glass base material 2; and applying force to both side parts of the 2nd incision C2 along the main surface of the glass base material 2 in the direction apart from the 2nd incision C2 to separate individual portions in the 2nd incision C2 and the 1st incision C1.
