PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly accurate instrument and method for detecting the degree of wear of a welding tip which realize grasp of the most suitable replacement timing of the welding tip. SOLUTION: The instrument is provided with: a measuring unit 14 which detects the positional information of a welding wire 13 obtained when the welding wire 13 pushed out from a welding wire hole 12 formed in the welding tip 11 is displaced till the welding wire 13 joins to the welding wire hole 12; and a wear judging unit 5 which calculates the displacement amount of the welding wire 13 based on the detected value detected by the measuring unit 14, and when the displacement amount is larger than the preset value, judges that the welding tip 11 reaches an application limit.
