The fuel cell stack [10] has the anode [12] coupled to a water line [16] and the cathode [14] to an air line [18]. A heat exchanger [23] is connected in a cooling circuit. In order that the fuel cell can attain operating temperature in cold conditions a heat source [24] is used to circulate heated fluid.
