PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent defective fixation due to the excessive temperature drop at the center part of a fixing roller in shifting from a control in the midst of an operation to a control in a standby state, regarding an image forming apparatus where the temperature of the fixing roller is controlled in accordance with the temperature detected in the non-paper passing area on the fixing roller with a built-in heater. SOLUTION: The fixing roller 61 incorporates the heater H, and a thermistor 63 (temperature detecting means) comes in contact with the non-paper passing area on the surface of the roller 61. Plural kinds of intermediate temperature to be detected by the thermistor 63 are prepared between a reference temperature during a fixing process and a reference temperature in the standby state, and each intermediate temperature is maintained for a prescribed time in descending order, then, the apparatus is shifted to the standby state. Thus, the maintaining time for each intermediate temperature is made longer as it comes to the last. Thus, the temperature of the center part of the fixing roller gently drops, then, the excessive drop of the surface temperature at the fixing roller center part arising in the case of directly shifting from the operating state to the standby state is prevented.
