A recording medium drive device capable of easily preventing a recording medium cartridge from being erroneously inserted into a holder in a recording medium drive device without increasing the cost of the recording medium drive device. A shutter opening piece (32c) opening a light transmission hole (101h) by sliding a shutter (110) supported on the case body (101) of the recording medium cartridge (100) is fitted to a holder (8) in the recording medium drive device (6). When the recording medium cartridge (100) is normally inserted into the holder (8), the shutter (110) is slid by the shutter opening piece (32c) to open the light transmission hole (101h). When the recording medium cartridge (100) is inserted into the holder (8) in an erroneous orientation, the opening edge of the function expanding groove (104) of the case body (101) is brought into contact with the shutter opening piece (32c) to prevent the recording medium cartridge (100) from being erroneously inserted into the holder (8).
