PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the overheating of a fixing device by detecting the occurrence of a paper jam, if the paper jam is caused in the fixing device. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus equipped with a fixing member for fixing the developer transferred onto a printing medium by heat is equipped with a temperature detector having a temperature detecting element for detecting the surface temperature of the fixing member and a detector for detecting the separation of the temperature detecting element from the fixing member beyond a predetermined distance. The fixing member is a fixing roller or fixing belt. The fixing roller is a heating roller heated by a heat source. The fixing roller is a pressure roller which comes in pressure contact with the heating roller. The fixing belt is a heating belt heated by the heat source. The temperature detector has two conductive elastic supporting members which respectively have first ends and second ends.
