PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new polymerizable compound which can be used as a material forming a light control layer for a light-scattering liquid-crystal device which enables low-voltage drive, even at a temperature ranging from -20 to 70°C. SOLUTION: The polymerizable compound is represented by formula (1) (wherein X<SB>1</SB>is -O-CH<SB>2</SB>-, O-CH<SB>2</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>-CO-O-CH<SB>2</SB>-, -O-CH<SB>2</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>O- or -O-CH<SB>2</SB>-CH(CH<SB>3</SB>)O-; R<SB>1</SB>is a 2-30C alkylene group, an alkyl triyl group, an alkyl tetrayl group or the like; R<SB>2</SB>is a 4-30C alkyl group; R<SB>3</SB>is a hydrogen or a methyl group; R<SB>4</SB>is a 2-5C alkyl group; X<SB>2</SB>and X<SB>3</SB>are each independently -O-, -OCO-, -CO-O- or a single bond; and m is an integer of 2-4C).
