<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film which shows various types of chromatic dispersion and refractive index anisotropy by a single sheet, for example, a retardation film of which the chromatic dispersion α=R(450)/R(590) (here, R(450) is a retardation value at the wavelength of 450 nm, and R(590) is a retardation value at the wavelength of 590 nm) is smaller than 1, and retardation film having negative refractive index anisotropy. <P>SOLUTION: A film in which bar-like inorganic substances with refractive index anisotropy are dispersed in a polymeric medium is drawn into the retardation film. In this case, various kinds of retardation films can be manufactured by selecting a polymeric medium with a specific refractive index ellipsoid and chromatic dispersion, and a bar-like inorganic substance. A composite polarizer can be made by laminating at least a sheet of the above retardation film on a polarizer. Moreover, the above retardation film or the composite polarizer can be combined with a liquid crystal cell into a liquid crystal display device. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
