PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyether-based lubricating oil base improved in compatibility with hydrocarbon base oil, and also good in lubricity. SOLUTION: The lubricating oil base consists of a polyether(E) represented by the formula(1):R<SP>1</SP>ä-[(O-CH<SB>2</SB>-CR<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>-CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>/(OA)<SB>n</SB>]-OR<SP>4</SP>}<SB>p</SB>( wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is the residue of a 1-24C compound having 1-6 hydroxy group(s); R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each H, a 1-6C alkyl, or one or more groups selected from 1-6C substituted alkyls each having a halogen atom, hydroxy or a 1-6C alkoxy group; R<SP>4</SP>is H or a 1-12C alkyl; A is one or more groups selected from ethylene group, 1,2-propylene group, 1,2-butylene group and 1,3-butylene group; (m) and (n) are each an integer of≥1; and (p) is an integer of 1-6 ) and having a weight-average molecular weight of 500-30,000.
