PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent EL display with inexpensive configuration which assures contrast by shielding external light. SOLUTION: The transparent EL display has an EL element constituted by successively layering a first electrode 12, a first insulating layer 13, a light emitting layer 14 including a light emission center, a second insulating layer 15, and a second electrode 16 on an insulative substrate 11, and enables light to be taken out from both sides on the insulative substrate 11 side and the second electrode 16 side of the EL element 10, wherein the outer side of the insulative substrate 11 and the outer side of the second electrode 16 of the EL element 10 are respectively provided with polarizing films 21 and 22 and the axes of polarization of these two polarizing films 21 and 22 intersect orthogonally with each other.
