A composition and method for treating mastitis by the use of an effective amount of at least one lytic specific for the bacteria causing the disease. The lytic enzyme is genetically coded for by a bacteriophage which may be specific for said bacteria. The enzyme may be at least one lytic protein or peptides in a natural or modified form.
