Class 75(1) [Also in Groups XXVII and XXIX] A self-closing fuel injection nozzle or valve device suitable for furnaces comprises a metal core surrounded by a resilient metal sleeve, the arrangement being such that a delivery gap either in or around the core is opened by the pressure of the medium to be passed by the device. As shown in Fig. 1 the core 1 has a transverse bore 3 into which open a supply bore 2 and a diametral slit 4, the latter terminating in an end surface 5 which is flat or recessed as at 6. The core is screw-threaded at 13 into the sleeve 7 which is resilient at its lower end and encircles the cylindrical, as shown, or conical discharge end of the core. The latter, which in this embodiment is also resilient, is recessed at 8 to reduce the pressure necessary to open the nozzle. Ducts 9, 10 for a cooling medium may be formed in the upper part of the core. The slit 4 may, alternatively and as shown in Fig. 2b which is an end view of the core have closely fitting but relatively slidable parts 15 to confine the issuing jet to the central part 4 of the slit. The slit may also take the form shown in Fig. 2c. Fig. 2d shows an embodiment in which the the slit 4 is inclined and may be supplemented by a second slit inclined in the opposite direction. A further embodiment utilizes a core without a slit but having a peripheral groove 20, Fig. 3, connected by radial passages 19 with the supply bore 2 and surrounded by a resilient sleeve the outward movement of which in response to fluid pressure in the groove 20 is limited by an annular, flanged member 22. Cooling ducts 25, 26 are provided. A modified form of this embodiment has an extension of the core below the sleeve of conical or other shape. A further modification has that part of the core immediately below the groove 20 of conical form.
