PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a traction drive mechanism having compact construction for efficiently transmitting great torque. SOLUTION: The traction drive continuously variable transmission comprises a first shaft 7 as an input shaft or an output shaft rotatably supported by a casing 10, a pair of pulley members 4 supported by the first shaft and having variable-width V-grooves, a second shaft 6 as an input shaft or an output shaft rotatably supported by the casing 10, a ring 3 for engaging with the pulley members 4 and the second shaft 6 to transmit torque between the first and second shafts 7, 6, and a mechanism for moving the ring 3 around the second shaft 6. Contact bearing pressure between the pulley member 4 and the ring 3 is controlled by imparting a subsidiary curvature of a preset radius of curvature to the side face of the ring 3 engaging with the pulley members 4 or changing the front face inclinations of the pulley members.
