PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for distilling and refining 4-fluoro-3-triphenylmethylphenol useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals/agrochemicals in high yield while preventing its thermal decomposition, to provide a method for thermally stabilizing the compound, and to provide a composition containing the same. SOLUTION: The thermal decomposition of 4-fluoro-3-triphenylmethylphenol can be prevented by adding 0.1-50 wt.% of an ethylene glycol compound( except monoethylene glycol, hereafter referred to as EG ) to the 4-fluoro-3-triphenylmethylphenol. The distillation and refining of 4-fluoro-3-triphenylmethylphenol can be accomplished in high yield without causing its thermal decomposition by distilling the composition comprising the 4-fluoro-3-triphenylmethylphenol and the above EG.
