To restrain the movement of the shift finger 3 of a gear shift lever 1 from the gates 4 and 5 of shift rods 7 and 8 respectively into the gate 6 of a shift rod 9 of, for example, reverse gear, the end of the finger 3 is provided with an inclined surface 2 co-operating with a similarly inclined surface 13 on the shift gate 5 so that the lever 1 must also move longitudinally against the pressure of a spring 16 before the finger 3 can move into the gate 6, thus providing a resistance to lateral movement of the lever to engage reverse gear.
