A plastic film(14) which forms an outer skin of the vehicle component is flame treated(22) on the rear side(18) and the film is formed in a plastic state. A material backing is added to the film either by foaming or injection methods. The film, which is initially flat, is thermoformed. A vaporizable silicon compound is added to the combustion gas for flame treatment and forms a layer(24) on the rear side(18) of the plastic film(14). The layer (24) covers the entire rear face of the film. An independent claim is included for a vehicle body component which comprises a plastic film outer face with a foamed or injected plastic backing layer and a thin coating of a silicon compound between them.
