The back-lighting system (1) consists of a light guide plate (7) with a reflector (6) against its rear surface, a source of visible light (2) against one edge, and a layer with a partially opaque zone (10') against its front surface to attenuate intensity of the light passing through the zone. The partially opaque zone is produced by a graduated white or silver tint deposited on or included in the layer, by a coating of a metal perforated with a series of holes of varying diameter that is smaller than the resolution of the human eye, or a metal coating applied in dots of different sizes.
