Deterioration during storage of a sealed alkaline battery having gas-permeable separators at least between the portions of the electrodes lying above the electrolyte level and an oxygen-rich atmosphere above the electrolyte as disclosed in Specification 815,726, is prevented by passing a floating current through the battery in the charging direction, the current flow being merely sufficient to maintain the electrolyte substantially free of the metal of the negative electrodes. The method is stated to be particularly applicable to a silver-zinc battery. |
