The variable drive for a motor vehicle, especially for a water pump in a motor vehicle, has a viscous fluid coupling (14) located between a driving (1) and a driven (12) component mounted on a rotatable shaft (6). At least one first flow path and at least one second flow path connect a fluid supply chamber to the fluid coupling. At least one through-passage of at least one flow path is altered by a valve (4,5) which is changed in its position by least one actuator. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a device for the operating of a cooling system for a motor vehicle incorporating at least one of the aforesaid variable drives; and (B) a use for the drive which is for the operating of a cooling system for a motor vehicle.
