A shock absorbing device uses a damper 1 which includes a cylinder 3 and a cushion rubber 2 attached to an end thereof. A piston 4 is slide-coupled inside the cylinder 3, and a piston rod 5 is connected to the piston 4, the piston 4 divides the interior of the cylinder 3 into two axially separated chambers full of viscous fluid, and has an orifice 13 connecting the two chambers. The piston 4 includes an inner member 4a integrally connected to the piston rod 5, and an outer member 4b about an outer perimeter of the inner member 4a and configured to move axially with respect to the inner member 4a. The inner and outer members 4a, 4b are configured to define a gap G therebetween though which the viscous fluid can flow, and to biased away from each other by a spring 12 disposed therebetween. The inner and outer members 4a, 4b are arranged so the gap G is reduced as the amount that the inner member 4a protrudes into the outer member 4b increases, to thereby define a variable orifice. |
