Guiding element (20) for guiding the rolling or gliding movement of objects (10) along a given path, the course in space of which can be chosen freely within broad limits. The guiding element (20) is fitted with a guiding member having the form of a cage-like arrangement of a plurality of at least partially flexible guiding tracks (21) and which spans the given path as far as possible without break; and with a plurality of supporting elements (22) arranged at a distance from each other along the given path, and which hold the tracks (21) parallel, at least in part at a distance from each other, in the prescribed cage-like arrangement. The guiding tracks (21) consist advantageously of a partially flexible, continuously produced profile made of metal or synthetic material. The supporting members (22) can be mounted on a fixed base member (23), for example in a position that can be regulated with regard to the base member (23). The profile material for the guiding tracks (21) and the discrete supporting members (22) together constitute a modular system by means of which guiding elements with the most varying courses can be realized.
