861,901. Alkali chloride electrolysis cells. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Aug. 20, 1959 [Aug. 26, 1958], No. 28457/59. Class 41. In an electrolytic cell containing a vertical cathode carrier plate adapted to receive liquid mercury as a fluid cathode flowing downwards on a vertical surface of said plate, a porous electrically non-conducting screening means is provided adjacent to the vertical surface of the plate for controlling the downward flow of mercury, said screening means having a plurality of openings sufficiently large to permit passage therethrough of an electrolytic solution but sufficiently small to hold flowing mercury against the plate. The screen may be a web, net or fabric of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. As shown, the carrier plate 1 which may be of iron may be in the centre of the cell 5 with a screen 3 on each side to separate the mercury cathode 2 from the anode 4 of graphite lumps or granules. Mercury flowing down the centre plate collects in channel 9 and is pumped to the decomposer 7, where the amalgam formed in the cell is decomposed, and thence recirculated to the top of the cell. The cathode carrier plate may be wider at the bottom than the top to ensure adherence of the mercury. If, in order to reduce the flow of mercury, a screen is used having such small meshes that they may become clogged with mercury, a coarse-meshed screen is used in addition to ensure insulation of anode from cathode. |
