The system has an exhaust gas reservoir (20) with an opening (22) to connect the reservoir only with a combustion chamber (10). A recirculation valve (24) alternatively closes/opens the opening. The valve is opened during an expansion phase, so that the exhaust gas enters into the reservoir, and is closed in an exhaust phase. The valve is re-opened in an input phase, so that the gas in the reservoir mixes with inlet air in the chamber. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine including a cylinder/piston assembly associated to an exhaust gas recirculation system.
