PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology for suitably cooling an internal combustion engine with a variable compression ratio mechanism. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine 1, a cylinder block 4 and a cylinder head 5 are displaced relative to a crank case 3 to make a compression ratio variable. Herein, a cooling water intake 41 formed in an outer wall face 40 of the cylinder block 4 abuts on an opening end 14 of a cooling water introduction pipe 13 fixed to the crank case 3 in a slidable and liquid tight manner and the position of the cooling water intake 41 relative to the opening end 14 is changed in linkage with a relative position change of the cylinder block 4 and the crank case 3, whereby the amount of cooling water flowing from the cooling water introduction pipe 3 via the cooling water intake 41 into a water jacket 10 is automatically adjusted.
