PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an elevator for a wheel chair provided in the elevator for the wheel chair and capable of detecting a position of an elevating member and preventing the elevating member of the elevator for the wheel chair from being unable to elevate and lower mechanically even if a position detection means for deciding an elevating possible scope of the elevating member causes failure. SOLUTION: This safety device is constituted in such a way that a limit switch operates when foreign matter comes into contact with a contact plate to stop elevating or lowering operation of the elevating member and this safety device is provided in a table part and a connection member of the elevator for the wheel chair, respectively. When the position detection means causes failure, this safety device operates irrespective of existence of foreign matter while the table part elevates or lowers from an upper limit position or a lower limit position to a position where the elevating member of the elevator for the wheel chair cannot elevate or lower mechanically to stop elevating or lowering operation of the table part.
