The invention relates to a commutator (16) for an electric machine (10), comprising several plates (26) that are separated from one another by slots (24) and have contact surfaces (27). At least one respective groove (30) is provided in the contact surface (27) of the plates (26), said groove essentially extending in the longitudinal direction of each plate (26). This permits the frequency, at which the brushes are excited by the commutator (16), to be increased, thus positively influencing the noise level of the machine.
