<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which soil of a sensor can be detected with highly accuracy by avoiding the reduction of accuracy for detecting the stained level of the sensor from being caused by a variation of reflected light quantity depending on the glossiness of a transfer belt. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is configured so as to store information of glossiness of a transfer belt 57 in a storage means and to raise accuracy for detecting soil of the sensor utilizing the information.
