<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator which is easily manufactured and excellent in robustness, and which has new structure having high flexibility in designing and freely modulating light intensity and an optical modulator array. <P>SOLUTION: A multimode waveguide 8 propagates a light wave inputted from an input side single mode waveguide 7 with a plurality of waveguide modes. Consequently, since in the case that an electric field is not applied to the multimode waveguide 8, a phase change is not produced in each of the waveguide modes, the inputted light wave is propagated through the multimode waveguide 8, and due to interference, a light wave with definite intensity is outputted to an output side single mode waveguide 10. In the case that the electric field is applied to the multimode waveguide 8, on the other hand, the phase change is produced in each of the waveguide modes and an optical signal is not propagated to the output side single mode waveguide 10 due to destructive interference at an output end of the multimode waveguide 8. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
